About This Quote

In the book, The Epic of Gilgamesh, a king named Gilgamesh is on a journey to find immortality. He encounters several obstacles along the way from the gods of the city of Uruk. In one section, he meets a man who ends his life by jumping into a vat of boiling water. On his way to find Gilgamesh, Enkidu says: “I have not encountered death in battle or in war.

I have come at the end of my days and have been made to drink my fill of life.” The notion that there is no life without death is very interesting because it shows how our world operates. Life does not always mean living forever; sometimes we must give it up in order to continue living.
